PLECTRUM
PLECTRUM
Plectrum is an experimental student project zine for alternative and acoustic music. Experimenting with typography, collage, and texture, Plectrum hopes to capture the deep, moody, raw, and relatively relatable emotions associated with alt/acoustic music and its artists.
When creating the look for this zine, I wanted it to reflect that deep, poetic, and sincere tone the moment it is picked up. I used two different colored paper: blue to convey the mood, and pink to contrast. The typography, layout and style are as well meant to match each article and artist.
TYPOGRAPHY
The principle typefaces used throughout the zine are Courier and Oswald. Custom typefaces were created for titles and display by warping and manipulating Oswald. The typography in Plectrum was designed to mimic the movement of the elements on each page.
PROCESS
During the experimentations for this zine, I listened to music to try to capture the feel of this genre on paper, a feel of relatability. The artists in this zine use their own personal experiences to create beautiful lyrics for their audience to relate to. Lyrics as if pulled out from their diaries.
Collages incorporating ripped textures and moody photography adorn the zine throughout to create the sense of a personal memory album while keeping the photography in solely black and white. This “strips” the photography of all color and focuses on tone and mood.
