LECTURE POSTER
For this student poster project, I was given a quote and tasked with developing a concept based on the meaning of that quote that was purely typographic, and without using any imagery or illustrations. The quote I chose was Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the thinks you can think up if only you try.” Using only type, I set out to convey the feeling of hope and optimism by putting the viewer through a child’s perspective on life. The concept I drew up for this was the feeling one would desire when holding on to the end of a balloon.
PROCESS
During my process and brainstorming, I experimented with the idea of progression and puzzling. Since my intent was to convey the meaning behind this quote through a child’s imagination, I thought of ways children see struggles and what makes them happy. Concepts I came up with included forming a maze with type, piecing together a puzzle, and using type to form a suspended balloon.
FINAL SKETCH
Out of my studies, my most successful ones were those with the concept of the type as a balloon with the intent of provoking the viewer to hold on to the end of the string.
Once I began the finished product, I started to notice just how fussy it can be to work the type into the shape I needed to get that ballon-like look. I curved each word manually and also had to readjust type sizes. I realized that the string didn't quite read as much as string, and decided to add the loop to enhance its string-like quality.
